Stanley Bermudez Moros
Biography
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to my web site and
to let you know a little bit about myself. I am a Zuliano* artist
living and working in the United States. I was born on January 9, 1965
in New Orleans, Louisiana. However, 16 months after my birth my parents,
my two older siblings, and I moved back to Venezuela. I was raised in
several towns on the East Coast of Lake Maracaibo and in the city of Maracaibo.
These years were extremely happy and formative years for me.
As
a child, I always demonstrated an ability to draw, model, and paint. For
me these artistic abilities were a game, a way to keep myself entertained
for hours. My siblings and I loved to draw, paint, and model with plasticine.
I attended several schools as a child and adolescent, schools like "Las
Cupulas" in Cabimas, "Colegio Gonzaga", "Instituto
Venezolano-Aleman", "Colegio Nuestra Senora de Chiquinquira"
in Maracaibo, and the "Instituto Simon Bolivar" in Tamare. In
all these schools I was known because I had a talent for art. Teachers
and classmates alike requested my services on regular basis.
I really never dreamed of becoming an artist. I had plans of becoming
a child Psychologist. In 1983 I moved to Houston, Texas to start my college
education. In my first year at North Harris College a counselor suggested
I take art classes to improve my English. I believe they assumed that
art classes would not required as much knowledge of English as History,
Math, and Government classes would. My English improved and my grades
in art were not bad either. I had so many credit hours in art and I loved
it so much that it just dawned on me, this is my calling, this is what
I am good at. I decided then to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In 1988 I
transferred to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX and in December
of 1990 I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art.
The following years were a little difficult. Reality set in. What kind
of a job could I get with a BFA? After 9 months of unemployment I finally
got a job as a kindergarten bilingual teacher for the Houston Independent
School District. All this time I continued to paint and exhibit every
chance I could. Three years later I married and my wife and I moved to
Indiana where I continued working as an elementary school teacher while
she worked on getting her Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy.
However, I continued to paint and exhibit my work. While my wife was in
graduate school, I started to think about the possibility of going back
to school and getting a Master of Fine Arts. In 1997 we moved to Virginia
and I started my graduate work at Radford University. In May of 2000 I
received a Master of Fine Arts from that same institution.
At Radford University I believe I have grown as an artist. I realized
many things about being an artist and the world of art. I have learned
so much about painting, sculpture, jewelry, and metalworking, among other
mediums. I came to the conclusion that as an artist I enjoy expressing
myself through a variety of mediums. This is evidenced by my Masters Thesis
in which I showcase Venezuelan cultural, personal, and religious altars.
With my altars I have been able to combine different mediums into one.
In this web site you will find a section for painting, sculpture, jewelry,
and altars. I hope you enjoy this site and spread the word to your friends.
Sincerely,
Stanley Bermudez Moros
